Beginners: what's the one question you're afraid to ask?

There are no silly questions in trading, and almost everyone who trades today had the same doubts at the start. Post yours below: leverage, margin calls, how to read a chart, what a lot really is, whether you need a demo account first, how much capital to start with, anything. More experienced members: pick one question and answer it in plain language. Let's build a friendly place to learn.

Leverage explained: why more isn't better

Leverage lets you open a position larger than your deposit. With 30:1 leverage, 1,000 euros of margin can control a position worth 30,000 euros. In the EU, 30:1 is the cap for retail clients on major currency pairs. The key point: leverage does not change the risk per trade, your stop loss and position size do. But high leverage makes it very easy to open an oversized position by accident, and that is what blows accounts. A sensible way to think about it: 1. Decide how much you're willing to lose (e.g. 1% of the account) 2. Place the stop where the trade idea is invalidated 3. Calculate the size from those two numbers 4. Only then check that the required margin is comfortable Most professionals use a small fraction of the leverage available to them. How much do you actually use? What is the spread and how it affects your trades

The spread is the difference between the bid price (where you can sell) and the ask price (where you can buy). It's the main cost of most trades, and you pay it the moment you open a position. Example: EUR/USD bid 1.1000, ask 1.1001 = 1 pip spread. Your trade starts 1 pip in the red and needs to move that far just to break even. Why it matters: - Scalpers with tight targets are hit hardest by wide spreads - Spreads widen around major news releases and during the rollover hour at the end of the New York session - Some brokers charge a raw spread plus a fixed commission per lot instead, so always compare the total cost Before choosing a strategy, check the typical spread of the pair at the time of day you trade. A setup with a 5 pip target and a 2 pip spread is a very different proposition from one with a 30 pip target. Note: educational content, not financial advice. Trading involves risk.
