Inflation (CPI)

Updated 2026-09-20

Definition

A general rise in prices. The CPI index measures the cost of a basket of goods and services.

Why it matters

It guides central bank rate decisions, so it moves currencies. What counts is the difference between the actual figure and the forecast, and often the "core" figure (excluding energy and food).

Practical example

US CPI at 3.3% against 3.0% expected: the dollar tends to strengthen, gold to fall.
