What we really know about ICT and SMC: evidence and limits

A critical lesson: what is plausible, what is unproven, and how to use these concepts with a scientific attitude.

What the evidence says

ICT and SMC are sets of concepts spread mainly by educators and online communities. As far as is publicly known, there are no independent, rigorous studies showing a statistical edge for their setups, after costs and in samples outside the development period. Academic studies on technical analysis in general give mixed results and often an edge that shrinks or disappears with transaction costs.

Why they can seem effective

  • They are flexible concepts: almost every chart contains an order block or FVG that 'worked', if you look in hindsight
  • Survivorship bias: those who succeed show it, those who lose stay quiet
  • Many concepts are new versions of classic ideas (support and resistance, supply and demand, stop hunting), which often work as a description of the past
  • Price reacts to obvious levels simply because many traders watch the same levels

What remains useful

  • A precise vocabulary to describe structure and context
  • Discipline: bias, hours, entry and stop rules defined in advance
  • A way of thinking about risk: stops where the idea is invalidated, targets at liquidity
  • Concepts that can be formalised and tested, as we'll see in module 5

How to use them honestly

  • Treat them as hypotheses to verify, not truths
  • Test every rule on your own data, with realistic costs
  • Be wary of anyone promising high win rates or guaranteed returns
  • Start with a demo account or a small size: the cost of learning must stay sustainable
