The formula

Pip value (in quote currency) = pip size × position units. Then convert to your account currency by multiplying by the exchange rate between the quote currency and the account currency. If the quote currency is your account currency, the rate is 1.

Example

1 standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD with a USD account: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 USD per pip. On USD/JPY the pip is 0.01: 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 yen, which at 0.0067 dollars per yen is about 6.7 USD.

What a pip is

A pip is the standard minimum unit of movement: the fourth decimal for almost all pairs (0.0001) and the second for yen pairs (0.01). Many brokers also show the pipette, a tenth of a pip.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a pip worth on EUR/USD?

With a USD account it is 10 USD per standard lot, 1 USD per mini lot (0.1) and 0.10 USD per micro lot (0.01).

Why does pip value change?

For many pairs the quote currency isn't your account currency, so the money value is converted at the current exchange rate.

Do I need to know pip value?

Yes: without it you can't compute the right size to risk a precise percentage of your account.
