Major pairs

Updated 2026-09-20

Definition

The most traded currency pairs, all against the US dollar: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD, NZD/USD.

Why it matters

They have low spreads, lots of liquidity and more historical data: they are the best suited to beginners. Pairs without the dollar are called crosses, those with emerging currencies exotics.

Practical example

EUR/USD is the most traded pair in the world and usually has the lowest spread.
