Updated 2026-09-20

Definition

The first currency in a pair: the price shows how many units of the quote currency you need to buy one.

Why it matters

In EUR/USD the euro is the base currency. Buying the pair means buying the base and selling the quote.

Practical example

EUR/USD = 1.1000: one euro costs 1.10 dollars.
